Why Good Products Feel Obvious

Design strategy for interfaces that disappear into the task.

The best compliment a product can get is that nobody talks about the interface.

Obvious is hard

Products feel obvious when they match what people already expect. Getting there takes research, many prototypes and the courage to remove clever ideas that confuse.

On Move OS, our first journey planner showed every possible route. Testing showed people only wanted to know which one to take. The final design shows one recommendation and keeps the alternatives a tap away.

Watch, don’t ask

People are bad at predicting what they will find easy. Watching five people use a rough prototype teaches more than a survey of five hundred.

Great design shouldn’t feel like design. It should feel like the only logical solution to a problem you didn’t know you had.
